A yard that stays wet long after the rest of the neighborhood dries is telling you something. Around Islip and Long Island, recurring water can come from surface runoff, roof drainage, low grading, saturated soil, or several of those causes at once. Choosing the right fix starts with identifying which type of water problem you actually have.
1. Watch what happens during the rain
If you can safely observe the yard during a normal storm, look for the path the water takes before it reaches the puddle. Water streaming from a downspout, crossing a driveway, or flowing off a neighboring high point is a surface-water clue. A lawn that looks fine during the storm but remains spongy for days afterward points more toward slow soil drainage or subsurface saturation.

A low spot in the lawn
Even a small depression can become a collection bowl when the surrounding yard slopes toward it.
Downspouts dumping beside the house
A roof collects a large amount of rainfall and concentrates it at a handful of downspout outlets. If those outlets end at the foundation or a low side yard, the soil can become saturated quickly.
Compacted or slowly draining soil
Soil that accepts water slowly can remain saturated even when the visible surface puddle is gone.
Hard surfaces changing the water path
Patios, walkways and driveways do not absorb rainfall like lawn. Their runoff has to go somewhere, and additions or grade changes can redirect it into areas that used to stay dry.
Subsurface water
If the ground remains wet without an obvious surface source, groundwater moving through saturated soil may be contributing to the problem.

French drain or surface drain?
This distinction matters. A French drain collects water through gravel and perforated pipe below grade. A surface system such as a catch basin collects water you can see flowing or ponding above grade. Installing the wrong type can leave the original cause untouched.
What to document before requesting an estimate
- • How long the water remains after rain stops.
- • Whether it starts near a downspout, driveway, patio, fence line or foundation.
- • Photos taken during the storm and again several hours later.
- • Whether the basement or crawl space gets damp at the same time.
- • Any recent landscaping, paving, additions or grading changes.
