Homeowners often hear “French drain” and “dry well” used in the same conversation, but they are not interchangeable. The easiest way to understand the difference is to separate the job into two questions: How do we collect the water? and where does that water go?
French Drain
Collects water along a path
A French drain is a gravel-filled trench with perforated pipe. Water in saturated soil enters through the gravel and pipe, then flows toward a chosen discharge point.
- Useful for a long wet strip or foundation-side saturation
- Intercepts water moving through soil
- Needs somewhere for the collected water to go
Dry Well
Stores water at one point
A dry well is a below-grade chamber or stone-filled storage area that receives runoff and provides temporary storage while water disperses into suitable surrounding soil.
- Often receives roof or collected yard runoff
- Useful when a gravity discharge point is not practical
- Performance depends heavily on soil and site conditions

When a French drain makes more sense
Consider a French drain when the problem stretches along an area rather than appearing at only one point: a saturated side yard, groundwater along a foundation, or a strip of lawn that remains soft after rain. The trench acts as an interceptor.
When a dry well makes more sense
A dry well is often considered when water is already being collected—especially roof runoff or water from catch basins—but there is no practical downhill outlet. The dry well becomes the destination rather than the collection trench.
When the right answer is both
On a flat property, a French drain can collect subsurface water across the problem area and route it toward a dry well. That is a common design concept because the systems perform complementary jobs. Whether it is appropriate on a particular property depends on elevation, soil, available space, the amount of water, utilities, and applicable local requirements.
Do not use perforated French-drain pipe for the entire downspout run
A downspout is already delivering concentrated water. The goal of the conveyance section is normally to move that water away without releasing it beside the house, which is why underground downspout drainage generally uses solid pipe until the chosen outlet or storage system.
What should be checked before choosing either system?

- • How quickly the yard dries after a storm.
- • The property grade and available elevation change.
- • Soil infiltration conditions at the proposed discharge area.
- • Existing utilities and structures.
- • Applicable municipal or site-specific requirements.
